Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh apologised on the floor of the House in 2005 to the Sikh community in particular and to the country for the 1984 riots, calling the incident shameful. Dr Singh said, “On behalf of our government, on behalf of the entire people of this country I bow my head in shame that such a thing took place.”
UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, in her election campaign in Punjab also apologised to the Sikh community for Operation Blue Star and the subsequent riots that followed.
In 2014, Rahul Gandhi also publicly stated that he shares Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh’s apologies and he shares their sentiments on the riots. At numerous other occasions, Mr. Gandhi has made it clear that all culprits should be held accountable and due process of law should be upheld in the same.
