Yes. It was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who laid the foundation stone of the project in 1961. It was delayed as a project report created some disputes over water distribution among Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Since it involved three states, negotiations were on, which were important to protect the federal nature of the state. But when there could be no consensus, a Narmada Water Dispute Tribunal (NWDT) was created in 1969.
The verdict of the same came in 1979, and water distribution was decided accordingly. The project was finally approved by the Planning Commission in 1988.
