The target of the first cycle of the soil health card scheme was to issue 14 crore Soil Health Cards (SHCs) by the end of 2017. While the PM made this comment, the govt had issued 9.06 crore health cards to farmers. But what is the purpose of this scheme?
It is to ensure that farmers have data about their soil health status so as to plan accordingly. Out of the total cards issued, only 2.50 crore had actual data on their cards about the health of their soil. In fact, states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal and Bihar, where more than 80% of India’s foodgrain is produced, show worst performance on the printing and dispatching of soil health cards to farmers.
